Four hundred fifty-six thousand people in Austria have let the validity of their CoV vaccination certificates expire and have not had another vaccination. 600,000 “green passports” will also expire in the coming months, should no recovery or further immunization be added for those affected, the Ministry of Health announced today.
There is no solution yet for expiring booster vaccinations without a recommendation for a fourth vaccination. So far, 185 basic immunizations – certificates of triple-vaccinated or recovered and then double-vaccinated – have expired.
The booster campaign had a big start in autumn last year, and the third stings are currently valid for 270 days. By March, 455,735 first vaccination series (two vaccinations or recovery and one vaccination) had expired. As of 1 May, there will be about 600,000 more first vaccination series, should those affected not get the third shot or become infected with the virus.
No recommendation for fourth vaccination yet
“Currently, there is no general recommendation for a fourth vaccination,” the ministry stressed. According to the National Vaccination Committee (NIG) recommendations, a fourth vaccination is currently not approved, and there are also little data available on immunocompetent persons.
However, the NIG further states: “Taking into account the epidemiological situation with high daily case numbers and high virus circulation, high-risk persons (e.g., immunocompromised persons) and persons aged 65 and over, in whom a shorter duration of vaccination protection is to be expected, can be offered a further vaccination at the earliest from six months after the third vaccination after an individual risk-benefit assessment by the doctor and on personal request (off-label).”
